In 1996, Earth Report visited the Black Sea and found a region on the brink of ecological collapse. Today it's a very different picture. Marine species which until recently had all but vanished are reappearing along Ukraine's Black Sea coast. Biologists have found three species of crab they haven't seen for thirty years. The once rare sea horses are now much more abundant. And most welcome of all, the economically important Black Sea turbot - until recently an endangered species - is back on sale in markets. Across the region it's the same story. All six countries surrounding the Black Sea report improvements in fish catches and biodiversity. The Black Sea is on the road to recovery, yet the reasons are far from simple. Earth Report returns to the Black Sea to find out why |

With scientists warning that fish stocks could collapse by 2048, Earth Report goes to the Netherlands to find out how supermarkets and top-brand retailers are demanding fish from sustainable sources. It's putting pressure on commercial fishing fleets to introduce nets that catch fewer immature fish-and so reduce one of the main threats to stocks |

Three quarters of all the world's fisheries are in serious trouble. The Western and Central Pacific is one of the few that's still in a healthy state. It's coveted by wealthy fishing nations and they're building bigger and ever more sophisticated vessels to tap its riches. The tiny island states of the region are at risk of losing their most valuable resource. This Earth Report goes to the Pacific to find out if a new fisheries agreement can achieve a breakthrough - and conserve a great fishery |

Earth Report travels to over a dozen locations to report on the state of global fisheries. The first instalment delivers a story that should ring alarm bells throughout the world. Almost without exception, our fishing grounds are being recklessly exploited. Indian fishermen use nets with mesh so fine that even seawater only trickles out and in the Mediterranean it may already be too late for the tuna. The catch is trailing off in most of the world's fishing grounds. If that were not bad enough, coastal fishing areas are under assault from land-based sources of pollution. This self-destructive approach is exemplifed by a story from Bali - new hotels were made from local coral. When the coral went, so did the fish. When the tourists went snorkelling there were no fish to see |

In the second part of Fate of the Oceans, Earth Report goes in search of sustainable fishing practices. They are outnumbered hugely by unsustainable methods, but some can be found. In the Canary Islands, fishermen use rod and line for a valuable species and only take fully mature fish. In Oman the authorities will only allow fishermen to use one kind of boat and net, and monitor catches strictly. In one small village in Cornwall in the UK a 70-year-old injunction that only sail power can be used, has prevented the over-exploitation of fish and oyster beds. Earth Report interviews leading decision-makers and finds awareness that drastic action must be taken to protect wild stocks and ecosystems. But we find that almost nowhere are measures being taken, that are equal to the crisis |

簡介+

The UN Environment Programme has identified 150 "dead zones" in the world's oceans - zones where marine life cannot exist due to lack of oxygen. Some of the dead zones are less than a square km in size, while others are up to 70,000 sq km. The first of two reports on this phenomenon shows that the problem begins on land, as agricultural fertilizers and untreated human sewage are washed into rivers, then carried out to sea. Excessive quantities of these nutrients cause an explosive growth of algae, tiny marine plants, which, when they decompose, use up all the oxygen, and suffocate other marine life. The programme addresses the problem worldwide, revealing how environmental mismanagement on land is becoming a grave threat to our seas, and looks at what is being done to combat the problem. Places visited include Korea, India, Mombasa in Kenya and Vietnam. |
