Earth Report travels to over a dozen locations to report on the state of global fisheries. The first instalment delivers a story that should ring alarm bells throughout the world. Almost without exception, our fishing grounds are being recklessly exploited. Indian fishermen use nets with mesh so fine that even seawater only trickles out and in the Mediterranean it may already be too late for the tuna. The catch is trailing off in most of the world's fishing grounds. If that were not bad enough, coastal fishing areas are under assault from land-based sources of pollution. This self-destructive approach is exemplifed by a story from Bali - new hotels were made from local coral. When the coral went, so did the fish. When the tourists went snorkelling there were no fish to see |

In the second part of Fate of the Oceans, Earth Report goes in search of sustainable fishing practices. They are outnumbered hugely by unsustainable methods, but some can be found. In the Canary Islands, fishermen use rod and line for a valuable species and only take fully mature fish. In Oman the authorities will only allow fishermen to use one kind of boat and net, and monitor catches strictly. In one small village in Cornwall in the UK a 70-year-old injunction that only sail power can be used, has prevented the over-exploitation of fish and oyster beds. Earth Report interviews leading decision-makers and finds awareness that drastic action must be taken to protect wild stocks and ecosystems. But we find that almost nowhere are measures being taken, that are equal to the crisis |

The home of the Scottish trawling industry is the setting for the two films contained within this DVD. Aberdeen played host to a huge fishing community, making a living from trawling and long-lining. Both forms of fishing are explained and examined as we board the Mary Craig and join the maiden voyage of the Glenstruan |

The UN Environment Programme has identified 150 "dead zones" in the world's oceans - zones where marine life cannot exist due to lack of oxygen. Some of the dead zones are less than a square km in size, while others are up to 70,000 sq km. The first of two reports on this phenomenon shows that the problem begins on land, as agricultural fertilizers and untreated human sewage are washed into rivers, then carried out to sea. Excessive quantities of these nutrients cause an explosive growth of algae, tiny marine plants, which, when they decompose, use up all the oxygen, and suffocate other marine life. The programme addresses the problem worldwide, revealing how environmental mismanagement on land is becoming a grave threat to our seas, and looks at what is being done to combat the problem. Places visited include Korea, India, Mombasa in Kenya and Vietnam. |

This truly unique interactive DVD teaches your students about the scientific method by having them use it to solve exciting problems. After describing the scientific method with a simple analogy to the steps you might take to improve your performance in basketball, the video immediately involves students in solving historical scientific problems including: Duplicate Galileo's observations of the moons of Jupiter and decide whether his findings indicate that the sun or the Earth is the center of the universe. Compare the three plans that NASA was considering for going to the moon. |

Witness the NASA expedition of Viking 1 and Viking2 to the red planet known as Mars. As well as exploration, their mission is to search for life, in the form of micro organisms. This is to be America's first hands-on study of the planet, and we hear top NASA scientists give their views on the possibility of life on other worlds.Since the earliest of times, man has been interested in the heavens. Mars was named after the God of War, because its red hue was reminiscent of blood. Early astronomers believed that the Martian surface was similar to that of Earth, and as such could indeed be habitable. This programme includes previously unseen footage of robot exploration, bringing us closer to the secrets of this mysterious planet, and perhaps the universe itself. |

Against a montage of cascading snow hurtling down from jagged mountains tops, we are reminded that avalanches are among the most lethal weapons in nature's arsenal. Avalanches of glowing red lava and hot ash erupt from volcanoes, swirling with noxious fumes that poison the atmosphere. Avalanches of rock rush like water, destroying everything in their path. With the use of stunning footage and harrowing personal tales, this DVD revealsthe mechanisms by which these forces of nature wreak havoc. |

Few natural sights compare to the awesome display of power seen when a tornado touches down and causes mayhem through a field or town. With the force to toss cars like children's toys and relocate a house in minutes, hurricanes and tornadoes produce the fastest winds on earth. This DVD explains how these freaks of weather are formed and what scientists know about them. Extensive footage from “storm chasers", interviews with eyewitnesses and home-video make compelling viewing as winds up to 300mph tear across the screen. |
